European Settlement

Uralla’s European settlement is famous for it’s sheep and cattle stations, for the Gold Rush where 5000 people flooded into town to try their luck and test their mettle in the goldfields. Our famous bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, Fred Ward, who is the subject of an early Australian feature film and of much controversy as to the mysterious circumstances of his death and burial, is a major attraction. Our international award winning super fine wool producers make the wool that hits the catwalks in Milan and Paris, and our long established beef industry, provides fresh local produce to our restaurants and clubs. Uralla Shire is home to four exciting cool climate cellar doors, and is home to a fine artistic and intellectual community and relaxed lifestyle.
